smoke gets in my face

hi all,
Stupidly tipped my 10yo briggs and stratton 420gl mower on its side last
week, and a fair quantity of the oil seeped out. After cleaning the mess and
topping the oil up,I find that when I start her up so much blue smoke pumps out of the exhaust that its impossible to continue,It also makes a strange
pinking sound. Can anybody tell me how to rectify the situation or is she for
the skip??
cheers,
alex

Re: smoke gets in my face

Hi and welcome to TSF

Most times the smoke will go away with some use/running.

Please check the air filter and see if it is oil soaked, if so clean and/or replace it.

No clue as to the ping noise.

Re: smoke gets in my face

Sounds like oil has made it's way into the cylinder.....leave the mower in a normal posture (upright) overnight and allow the oil to drain back to the crankcase. Make sure the the mower is not overfilled with oil!! It is very common for a mower to "smoke" from the exhaust if it is tilted to an extreme...such as cutting a ditch. I have had this occur many times and the smoking situation is short lived. You must allow the engine to recover by getting the unit in a level position where the oil is burned out of the cylinder... if you persist on cutting at an extreme angle without allowing the engine to clear the cylinder of oil you will cause damage.
