John Deere 165 stuck intake valve
Hi.
I have an old JD with a kaw engine in it. Its the wifes ride. Anyways, she finished cutting the grass and left it out so I could put it back where I wanted it. A couple hours later. When I went to start it, right away I noticed it was rolling over faster than normal and never fired up. So I tried it again and listen to it this time. This is my conclusion, just looking for a little more experience. It rolls over easy. It sounds/feels like the exhaust valve is opening and closing, but I can hear it spitting back to the carb. Which lead me to the intake. What I am wonder is: Has anyone ever had a cam break in these Kaws. Or is it just possible I have piece of junk holding the intake valve open? I don't have a clue on how old it is or how many hours are on it. |

Re: John Deere 165 stuck intake valve
I had a little time yesterday and pulled the head.
The seat became unseated from the block. It walked out about a almost 1/4 inch. So hopefully, All I need is a valve and a seat. Is there any trick to removing/installing the keepers on the spring? Tia |

Not sure about Kaw's, but it's very difficult to re-seat the valve seat in most small engines. You can try peening it back in place, but it won't necessarily last very long. We no longer mess with valve seats at our shop, because of that. It either gets a new head or shortblock.

Re: John Deere 165 stuck intake valve
^^^ That was what I was afraid of hearing. I'm hoping that the seat is cracked and that is why it came out. Then I might try to put a new seat back in it.
Thanks for the link for the keepers. That's almost what I had in mind when I was am to do it. Thanks for all your help. |

Freeze the seat, in a freezer before you put it back in. Peen it.
Years and years ago, I had B&S engine, same thing. It was put back in and last for years. I it guess down trying that way to save money or the sure way and buy new head or short block. BG |

Absolutely. If it's your own piece of equipment, there's no harm in giving it a try.

Re: John Deere 165 stuck intake valve
Here is a picture of what I was working with. I tried to remove it, just for a minute. I couldn't get it to budge. So I just drove it back home. I used the back side of an 1 3/16" One inch drive socket. It fit perfect. We'll see how long it last. I ended up firing it up and running it for a couple minutes. But I could us the torque spec for the head if anyone has it. Thanks.

Re: John Deere 165 stuck intake valve
Not even any guesses on the head bolts. I'd say any where from 20-35 ft lbs. She's getting buttoned up today. I'm gonna stop where I think it feels right.
Thanks for all the help. Cheers.
