Troy built string trimmer DOA!
I hope this is the place for this post....
I have a 4 stroke string trimmer. Model TB525SS. It has worked great till now. It is like 2-3 years old. I have never had any problems with it. I used it the other day and it was working fine. I used it about 10 mins and I got something in my eye so I shut it off. I let it sit about 5 mins. It started and didn't want to run. I thought I'd let it set and try it when it cooled off. The cooler it got the less it would try and start. It would spit and sputter but not run. Finally it wouldn't even do that. NOTHING. Drained the gas and still nothing. It has spark..I can pull rope and get an arc on the plug when held against case. SI I have spark. Didn't act like it was getting gas so I sprayed some in the carb and nothing still won't hit. Now I don't know about you all but usually in my times and travels if you have spark and introduce gas it will TRY and start. Nope nothing! The local small engine guy says he talked to the technicians and they say might be a cam, cam bracket, or get this recoil spring....??... I took the valve cover off and the valves are moving. The thing has compression. I can feel it when I put my thumb over the spark plug hole. I even sprayed some raw gas in the cylinder and quickly screwed plug in and it will not do anything like start. Anyone ever hear of this problem? The valves wouldn't be operating if it was the cam would they? Seems like it might be a timing thing...? ANY help would be appreciated!!! |

Re: Troy built string trimmer DOA!
Hi and welcome to the forum
I see that you have asked the same question in at least 3 other forums. Best guess check flywheel key, then coil. BG Last edited by Basementgeek; 06-19-2009 at 09:54 PM. |

is there a law against asking a question on more than one board? The idea is to catch someone who actually knows what they are talking about. You know..Get the question out there...

Re: Troy built string trimmer DOA!
Is there a law against it? No, but many people think is not proper, doing it at the same time. Now if one forum can't, certainly ask some place else.
You got fuel, you got air, you got compression, so that leaves only spark. You said else where that you tried a new plug already. A spark plug in free air will fire doesn't mean it will fire under compression. Pull the flywheel, check the keyway, replace the points if it has them. If that does not work, remove the coil and clean the mating area between the coil and frame. You can go online and check the Troy Bilt site and ask them. Re: Troy built string trimmer DOA!
well, I won't come on here and say what I feel. Not my nature to be rude. I have problem and chose to search for some places like this and see if I could find someone who might have had the problem and knew how to address it quick, to the point and without doubt. I have actually had that to happen. I didn't come here , or anywhere else, to cause one bit of discord. I came here with a legitament question. I came in peace.
Why , may I ask, is it wrong that I happened to ask it on other boards? Is that a sin I am ignorant to? I just did i to cover more "ground". Obviously no one here has a clue other than to follow basic trouble shooting procedure. That is all well and good and for that I thank you. I do have a basic knowledge of how these things work. Not rocket science. I , like I said earlier, was hoping to come across someone having had this problem with this machine before therefore knowing exactly what one might address first and foremost thus saving time and maybe learning something useful in the process. Guess I will go see what kind of answers I got on the 'other' boards. If that would be OK with you, Sir. |

Re: Troy built string trimmer DOA!
As most of the world is free, feel free to ask others places also. I know I nothing about your Troy Built (Troy Bilt) 4 cyc timmer, never had one as I still use about 20 year old Jon Deere one.
