Tecumseh 8-10 engine swap?

I have a Ariens RM830e with an 8hp Tec engine that is in need of repair-
TVXL-195-150226
Was woundering if the tvm220-157054e / 10hp would be a direct bolt in replacement for this engine? A few extra horse can’t be bad .. my yard is all up hill both ways
It apperars they have the same shaft size but was unable to find mounting bolt specs for either engine. Any help or comments would great thanks.

What does the XL stand for in TVXL?

Re: Tecumseh 8-10 engine swap?

Hi and welcome to the forum

Engine mount holes can always be drilled if they don't match. The bigger problems are the throttle/choke set up. Same with the electrical connections.

Seeing how this a 20+ year old mower I would not be putting a whole lot of money in it.

I can't answer your question as what XL stands for.

Re: Tecumseh 8-10 engine swap?

Thank you for your reply, much appreciated.
I was unaware that this mower was over 20 years old but even so it is in great condition with the exception of the engine (uses oil). The throttle and choke issue? Could you please elaborate, it appears as if that is just a cable adjustment of sorts ?! electrical connections I don't see as being a big deal. How many wires do these small engines have? 3-5?? I am very proficient with electrical issues . I deal with them on a daily basis. Any extra info would be great and thanks again!

Re: Tecumseh 8-10 engine swap?

You are going to have to do the "leg" work yourself, at these site, to see if you can answer your questions:

3-11 HP
http://www.cpdonline.com/692509.pdf

http://www.tecumsehpower.com/framese...uals/index.php

http://www.smallenginesuppliers.com/...ine-specs.html

Tecumse (and Briggs) made basic engines, however Ariens may have had them make some changes, to suite them. You are not going to really know what is different, if anything, until start on it.

Re: Tecumseh 8-10 engine swap?

Thank you.. those links were just what I needed! I found that xl= long life engine and that both motors were identical in block size stroke and bore . So my next question is where does the extra 2 hp come from? head, valves, cam, timing or carb??
Spec wise they look identical.

Thanks again for your quick informational replies.

The extra HP? how knows for sure. Possibly bigger valves, better exhaust.
