Re: 18hp briggs won't turn over
Hi forr
Your description of the problem is very cryptic. Can you provide detailed information in a legible concise manner of what the initial problem was, what steps you took to resolve the issue, and what components were replaced if any. Please try to understand, as a technician and with that in mind I can only speak for myself here, that mechanics are not omnipotent, we cannot just simply snap our fingers and the answer comes to us. It doesn't work that way, ( although many of us wish it did) we can only make a diagnosis based on the information that is available given to us by you ( the people) in order to visualize the problem, and attempt to make a judgment call and inform you what steps are needed to to fix it. I'm not picking on you, it's just the way it is. OM |

Re: 18hp briggs won't turn over
OK ,when you try to start 422707engine .the starter does turn the engine over with plug out. with them in it like the compression stopping turnover. it will turn &start if you put truck battery to it. I put a new starter on ,did the same.reseated valves , ajusted 4-6 intake 7-9 exhaust. the engine started once like new . then next time it was back to like flywheel just can't get over the hump , backto old problem Tank you Dan spec are from B&S site

Re: 18hp briggs won't turn over
Did you purchase a B&S starter or an aftermarket? I have seen some really bad (IE weak) aftermarket starters. The battery must be a minimum of 220CCA, the more the better for a twin. Check voltage at the starter while cranking, you should have a minimum of 9.5 volts while cranking, plugs out it should be higher. With a strong battery, jumping straight to the starter, if it doesn't crank well, it may have some drag somewhere, belt, piston scuffing...If it does crank with the starter jumped to directly then you may have a problem with wires, connections, terminals, grounds...
Also check to see if one of the valves opens a little when the piston is coming up on TDC, the cam could have a faulty compression release. FYI, this mechanic has been putting in 11 (+) hour days, not much time to give away for free for what I charge for... Last edited by k2skier; 06-04-2009 at 03:58 PM. |
