Need flywheel puller

Hi guys

I need a little assistance on this one. I need to find a flywheel puller for Tecumseh and B/S engines. I modified a metal plate to act as wedge with threaded rods to remove flywheels on some models. It's worked well so far, but different configurations make it very difficult at times to implement my home made tool. Is there a universal puller for both types, if so where can I purchase one.

Any insight is most welcome.

Thanks

Re: Need flywheel puller

Check into an automotive bolt type gear puller. They are bigger, but they work OK for most mower size type engines.

Here is one like I use. Of course you will need smaller bolts and washers.

Re: Need flywheel puller

I use the automotive bolt gear puller also for both techumseh and BS. Works well although some of those flywheels are tough to get off. It will work on either most small engines, but any gear puller (or flywheel puller) is tough to get in there where you need it to pull the thing because of the limited space between the flywheel and the side of the engine where the clamps fasten down.

Just be very careful with those fins, they do break and the flywheel can warp if you put too much pressure on them. Some times a little tap on the bottom sides (after you put pressure on with the gear puller) of the flywheel with a leather mallet can pop them right up. Whatever you do, don't use a hammer or metal object to tap them trying to get them off. LEATHER only if you have one of those mallets.

Re: Need flywheel puller

Thanks guys :)

Basementgeek: Thanks for the link , I'll be making a purchase on that particular puller asap based on your recommendation. From my understanding a typical crankshaft pulley puller can do the same job.

Tumbleweed36 : I use the same method, the only difference I don't have a leather hammer. I use a wooden hammer made by a broomstick handle and a piece of 4x4 wood threaded into it. I've used a dead-blow and teflon hammer types, but I find they still damage the fins if a miscalculation occurs.

Re: Need flywheel puller

We use crank protectors (available from the engine mfg). You remove the flywheel nut, thread or set the protector over the crankshaft end, and whack it with a hammer while putting gentle upward pressure on the flywheel. Works great for most cases.

Re: Need flywheel puller

Hi:

The automotive puller I linked, will probably need bolts additional bolts and washers. The supplied bolts are likely to big.

Use of gear type pullers with arms/jaws you risk breaking the center of the flywheel, especially on non cast iron flywheels. Breaking the fins will through it off the balance.

Re: Need flywheel puller

Basement geek: The bolts are not a problem, I just go to the local hardware store and purchase threaded rods for whatever diameter I need. In worse case scenarios when rods are not available, I take an ordinary nail using hex nuts for spacers grind the tip off and and tap my own threads, the flywheel pops out like a charm.
