5hp Briggs quits running
5hp Briggs & Stratton vertical model 10L502 1016 F1 will run for several minutes then quits. Have removed and cleaned carburetor, gas tank and filters including air filter. Cleaned jets and picup tube. Replaced carburetor Diaphragm plus gasket and primer. Will restart but shuts down within seconds and not minutes. After long shutdown period the cycle repeats. Thanks

Re: 5hp Briggs quits running
Hello Mr Happy
The problem you are describing sounds like after you cleaned the jets, the carburetor float adjustment is probably set too high, and the idle speed is low. Re-set the float to the proper spec and it should fire up. |

Re: 5hp Briggs quits running
Thank you for the quick reply and suggestion. However, this is the pulse type carburetor also called a Diaphragm-Carburetor and does not have a float, I wish it did as I liked the old style carburetors with chokes and floats. I will take the carburetor apart again and reclean everything but wonders if I have a mag problem.

Re: 5hp Briggs quits running
Try running with the gas cap off. if it continues to run check the gas cap for clogged vent hole. I have seen two engines that had this problem.

Those carbs usually have some small springs inside on the diaphragm, if they're not put in correctly or left out completely, it won't work. Another thing I've seen is the intake manifold coming loose or cracking from vibration, and it can't suck gas.
