B&S 14.5 on an MTD (late 90's)

I purchased this 42" cut MTD for the bagger, but tried the engine and it turned over. Checked the oil and it didn't show, but stick had a clear liquid on it. Gas, and plenty in the crankcase. Drained it and put in oil, gave it a little gas and fire right up. Decided to clean gummed up carb and afterward, it wont start. I am familiar with small carbs and sure I got it cleaned, but helper put the solanoid on the bottom and turned it with hand and it turned inside. Did this pull the wires loose? Is it why it wont run? Getting plenty of fire to plug and it is new. Also, gas runs directly to crankcase, whats up with that?
Thanks in advance..

Hi and welcome to the forum

Sounds like you need to rebuild the carb, not just clean it. Probably needle and seat which would account for all the gas in the crankcase.
