Re: 15 hp b&s vertical

Is it possible that the engine layed on its side for awhile during the changeover, getting oil into the PCV flowsystem? Sometimes when you lay these motors over, they make a mess inside themselves, and then they smoke for 5-10 mins after starting again. does it make any crazy sounds while it's running, or is it just smoking?

I'd say check for compression, and post back what you get out of it.

If you happen to feel adventurous, you could always pop the head off of it and check the cylinder walls for oil, but then you'll need a gasket set.

Re: 15 hp b&s vertical

the engine was taken from one tractor to the next one. i never had it on it side. but i will check the compression today and get back. it just like it is building pressure in crank case and pushing the oil out. i will get back with the compression number.

Re: 15 hp b&s vertical

Check the air filter on the engine. You should have a crank case breather on the engine with a hose leading to the air filter box on the unit. If you have a lot of engine oil in the breather box or on the air filter. Pull the rubber hose off the air filter box. Make sure the engine oil is full and start the engine. Watch the rubber hose for oil coming out of it. If it does replace the crank case breather. They do stick open on the briggs engines. Let us know if this helps any.
