Briggs flywheel and starter gear problem

I have a Husky mover with a Briggs engine and the gear on the starter that engages the flywheel keeps getting chewed up or broken. I noticed the flywheel ring gear has all the pieces between the teeth broken at the top which probably lets the starter gear travel too high. I am going to replace the flywheel ring gear but wanted to know if there was anything else that may be causing the problem that I need to tend to also.

Nope. The factory installed ring gears were plastic to save cost, the replacements are aluminum.

Unless the starter mounts are somehow out of alignment, changing the flywheel gear should definately keep it from eating up starter gears.

And yeah, if it's nylon, then i'd change it just out of principle.
