Question oil burner

I have a 14.5hp briggs and stratton vertical shaft lawn mower engine that at random times produces large cloud of smoke out the exhaust. Then it will run and not smoke at all. I know when it smokes it is from burning oil. I took the breather out and cleaned it but had no success. Please let me know a solution. Thanks.

You may have too much oil in the engine, or your rings are bad.

Re: oil burner

Do you operate this mower on a slope of any kind? It could be that oil is being forced into the cylinder, or into the breather as you are moving up/down/across a slope.
