How do you get this off?!?!

So I figured out the piston on my 3.8hp Tecumseh turns but the valves don't move in and out so I have to take the whole thing apart to get at the problem, but how do you get this thing off so I can get at one of the bolts that hold the engine on (see pic below) instead of just mangling the plastic shield.

That's the blade adapter, it's just rusted on. On a new mower, they slide right off. I would thread a bolt in the crankshaft and use a gear puller to pull it off.

I thought it would come off with a puller. I tried just whacking it a few times to jar it loose but no dice. Gotta go buy a puller.

Re: How do you get this off?!?!

Yes, be sure to soak it with penetrating oil. Not WD-40, either. Sometimes you can get them off by whacking it, but not with that plastic guard the way it is.
