16HP Briggs runnig rugged

I have a Simplicity Regent 16 with a 16HP B&S engine. When I start the mower it starts like it usually does. However, after mowing for a while it begins to jerk and sputter then back fires and dies. It then will not restart, no matter how hard it tries. Any ideas what can be the problem? I took it to the local Simplicity dealer and they worked on it 4 times each time I get it back it works for a mowing, if I am lucky, then does the same thing. I am tired of paying them money and them not really fixing the problem. Thank You.

B&S 16HP engine

Type 0642-A1

Re: 16HP Briggs runnig rugged

you might want to check the keyway on the flywheel sometimes they will get a grove in them and not shear off. it can throw the timing off a bit when they get in a certain bind.

also the coil could be going out or have a bad wire on it.

next time it acts up try pouring a bit of gas straight into the carb and let me know if it started for a minute then quit.

hope this helps
Bud.
