sub woofer shot???

I bought a sub woofer and amp from a friend about 2 years ago, and he ended up in jail, and I havn't seen or heard from him since he got out.

Anyway I fried the amp cause I hooked the remote wire to the headunit chassis, and fried the headunit where the amp hooks up, but other then that the head unit works fine.

I hooked the remote wire to the fuse box after doing research, and everything works great, only the sub woofer isn't working.

I touched the remote wire to the positive battery side where the power is hooked up for the amp and I heard the sub woofer kick on, but then it turned off.

I just want to know how to test if the sub woofer is shot?

I also want to know if I could somehow fix the sub woofer?

The sub woofer is a panasonic 12" dual!!!

I know I wrote a lot of info that might not be necessary, but Please stay on topic about how to test the sub woofer, if its shot, or if I can fix it.

Re: sub woofer shot???

Try the fuse.

Id look for something with a higher RMS, 200W RMS is fairly low and that sub only put out 400W.

the higher the RMS the better.

Re: sub woofer shot???

There should be a fuse along the 12V power line from your battery.

Most common type is a little glass cylinder usually placed less than 18" from the battery.

Re: sub woofer shot???

yeah I replaced that. I might have blown it again though.

Is that the only thing that could be wrong? could the subs really be fried?

Re: sub woofer shot???

im not sure about the subs being fried. There isnt really much to fry on them and it would more likely be the amp.

Re: sub woofer shot???

The amp is brand new, and its hooked up right as far as I know. The amp has a protect light, and a power light, but the only light that comes on is the power light.

I think the protect light would be on if the ground wasn't good. I know the ground is good cause I took a multimeter to it.

Re: sub woofer shot???

well if the amp is getting power then the fuse will be ok.

Can you try your sub on another amp if possible?

Re: sub woofer shot???

The amp that I might have fried I can try it on.

If the sub would be fried are the speakers fried? If thats the case I could probably replace the other wires in the sub.

Re: sub woofer shot???

By the sounds of it, you have a passive sub. so it wont have a amp built in (active subs). it will either be broken or still work. Sorry, but I dont know how you tell unless you can rig your stuff up with someone elses.

My amp that might be fried is a Bazooka 750 watt, and my new one is a Lightning audio 750watt.

Re: sub woofer shot???

If it wasn't grounded right would the protect light be on or off? I tried doing research, and I looked in the lightning audio manual, but it doesn't say anything about whether the protect light should be on or off.

I did just notice that the wiring for my subs isn't right. I had the both subs connected to the + and - L instead of one on the L and one on the R.

Thank you. I will have to try that when my car gets back home. My parents have 1 motorcycle which they need a vehicle other then the motorcycle and their truck just died. They took all my money and went out to find a car. I just made $500.00 today that they don't know about, so I am good.

the protect light indicates a short on the speakers.

My protect light is off and it is working fine.

Re: sub woofer shot???

Does the head unit have basic 4v RCA connectors that are pre-amp out?

Re: sub woofer shot???

I am not sure what that is, but I got everything working. The sub woofer is working finally!!!
I even got my other amp working, so I am selling the amp that I had before. My bazooka 750 watt.

I don't want to sell my lightning audio 750 watt, cause I just bought it.
