89 Chevy corsica heating up

I changed the thermostat in my corsica it has the 2.8 liter 6 cylinder. Before the thermostat opens the temp gauge goes all the way to hot before opening. The old thermostat was doing the same thing. Any suggestions?

Re: 89 Chevy corsica heating up

Hi ghines6987

Check your radiator to see if the core is still intact by rubbing your hand on the radiator, if it crumbles it means the core is gone and the radiator needs replacement. Flush your cooling system including the heater core, make sure the fan radiator, sensor and relay are working by jumping the pin connectors. If everything checks out, start the engine open the radiator cap and look inside the radiator see if the coolant has good circulation throughout the system making sure the belts are tight. If circulation is poor, replace the water pump.

post back your findings.

Re: 89 Chevy corsica heating up

The radiator is also new im not getting much flow but im getting bubbles and burps when i fill the radiator. ive been told that that is a sigh of a bad head gasket or cracked head.
I dont want to change the water pump if the head is bad.
Can you please help me with this one.

Re: 89 Chevy corsica heating up

The bubbles and burps doesn't necessarily mean that it's a blown head gasket, it can also means that there is air in the system and it has to be bled. On corsica's there is a bleeder valve, remove the bleeder valve while filling and this will take the air out of the system. Once you are certain that there is no air in the system, pressurize the system with a radiator tester and then pay close attention to the lower intake manifold gaskets. If they are bad it will show you right away, unfortunately on corsica's this is a common problem.

If the bubbles and burps blow out of the reservoir cap then there is a good chance that the manifold gaskets are gone.

post back your findings.
