1996 olds 98 no start

Engine light on steady, security light on, went in for CA smog, it was running fine, OBD said no problem, systems OK, after test it said >oil lvl sys prob< now it is in garage at home, no start, battery ok? Also A/C not working, looks like it blew seal, oil signs.

Hi Portland,

Have you tried resetting the security system? With the engine light and no OBDII codes, I would suspect it as the won't start issue.

"went in for CA smog", was that the California EPA test and did it pass?

"oil lvl sys prob", I would have thought that this one would cause a OBDII code to be produced. Even though it sounds like it would keep the engine from running, it should throw a trouble code.

The AC not working shouldn't keep the engine from starting.

If resetting the security system don't fix the start issue, post back and we can try some old fashion troubleshooting.

Hi Mack1, yes I took it in for test all emission tests PASS except EGR ( California test) HC (PPM) Max 130 Meas 1.
Tech said clean EGR, I did, new gasket, took it back he said
it would still would not work, not getting a signal from OBD, only if he made it work, so I go in for a Diagnostic Test next.
I do not know how to set security system?
When it went in for test it was running fine, read out says
( on dash board ) >All Systems OK< Thanks ,Portland.

Hi Portland,

I don't know how to reset the either as I have never had a vehicle with the system on it. In earlier posts, they have talked about the system and how to reset them. I'm almost certain that the system will keep the engine from starting once it has seen a security violation. From what I recall, it takes several minutes to reset when you know how to do it.

I would have thought that would have been covered in the Owners Manual. You might call a local dealer to get the info.

Well, 1996 98 is back to running very well, 90,000 +, the Smog fail was of a blown fuse (10 amp) I believe, for the EGR valve.
They replaced ignition modual, plus new ign key lock,it took a month for them to do it all.
I really think it was the EGR fuse in the first place.

That's no problem just wish we could've gotten the solution before you spend some money on somebody else to fix it
