Re: 1996 grand cherokee 4.0 trans. problem
Hi smithjwracing86,
First off I'm going to presume you have an automatic tranny. Another presumption would be that your tranny has the correct fluid level. I don't think the issue of 4WD or not will be a factor, but it would be nice to know the mileage and to confirm if it is in fact an automatic tranny. I don't have the actual ATSG manual for your tranny, but maybe the problem can be resolved through generic symptoms. |

Re: 1996 grand cherokee 4.0 trans. problem
First thing is to bring the tranny up to operating temperature and check the fluid with the engine running and the car in "park".
Take notice if the fluid is off-color or has a burnt smell. Has the tranny been put under stress?? Heavy load, towing, mudrunning....etc?? |

Fluid and filter change....... first thought that comes to mind is possible damage to the "O" rings on the filter. Sometimes the O ring/s get "rumpled" or damaged during installation and suck air instead of fluid when the temps get low.

Re: 1996 grand cherokee 4.0 trans. problem
Did you do the actual work or a shop??
Any mention (if shop did the work) of excessive shavings in the bottom of the pan?? Some shavings are normal...... that is why most automatic trannies have a magnet in the pan. If you did the change..... did you notice excessive shavings?? |

Re: 1996 grand cherokee 4.0 trans. problem
ATs can be a real pain....too many parts. You ought to see the "blow up" of a Ford E40D. Had a friend who thought he was going to rebuild his, my kid sold him one that we had rebuilt. The guy couldn't even install the thing.....let alone rebuild it.
On my way to the "gradge" to dig out the books......... |

Re: 1996 grand cherokee 4.0 trans. problem
When my son gets home from work I will ask him if he has the ATSG book on Cherokees. I don't know if he bought one or not..... he only had to replace the transfer case.
The very first listed cause is (as always) fluid level.... the car should be driven 10 to 20 miles.... city miles... before checking the fluid level. Unlike when checking oil level in the engine..... the car must be running at an idle and on level ground. I'm sure you know this, but I just have to make sure we are both on the same page. From what I am seeing in other manuals this could well involve tearing into the valve body.... it will also involve testing line pressures. It could be the pump relief valve.... or even the pump. Are you getting any trouble codes?? |

Re: 1996 grand cherokee 4.0 trans. problem
That could very well be the problem... depending on the line. Let me see if the kid has the manual... he should be home now.
"not available" not even voice mail.... must have his phone shut off. I'll keep checking.... without the specific manual, I can't trace the lines that would have a check valve. Bad line..... leaking or crimped?? Last edited by SABL; 12-18-2008 at 04:22 PM. |

Re: 1996 grand cherokee 4.0 trans. problem
Is the tranny line still damaged?? If you have a pinched cooler line, that could disrupt the flow of fluid. I would guess it would be the return line...... the check valve being in the hose I'm not so sure of.
The lines are available: http://www.napaonline.com/MasterPage...Line&VehCode=Y If this is the case...damaged.... it should be taken care of soon. The "growl" when reverse is being engaged.... does not sound good. We've had 8 Cherokees in the family and have had no tranny issues other than 1 transfer case..... existing condition when purchased 4 yrs ago. 1995 4DR...4WD.....95K mi.......$950. Needed transfer case, front bumper and grill. Still runs great!! My youngest son owns it now. Last edited by SABL; 12-18-2008 at 05:43 PM. |
