Hi and welcome to the forum

Does it "crank" even though it will not start?

Re: 1990 Jeep Cherokee - won't start and stay running

Hi jmk1977,

A very good place to start is to see if the problem is fuel or ignition. That will eliminate half the troubleshooting.

For fuel test, remove the ducts from the intake manifold such that you can spray starter fluid dirrectly into the intake manifold. If the Jeep will start on the fluid, see if you can keep it running using short sprays of fluid.
If you can, the problem is in the fuel system. Likely the pump since you replaced the filter. You will need to look up the pressure for your make and model. Then get a pressure gauge and screw it onto the fuel rail at the engine. Start the engine (with spray if you have to) and read the pressure. If the pressure is low, take a rubber hammer or flat board and hit the bottom of the fuel tank to jar the pump. Often that will cause a failing pump to put out more pressure. If the pump is failing, replace it.

For the ignition test, remove a sparkplug (or use a spare) and lay it on the surface of the engine touching metal. Connect one of the sparkwires to the plug. Try to start the engine while watching the spark gap. You should get a hot blue spark. If a weak red spark, or no spark, the problem is in the ignition system.

See if these tests will at least point you in the right dirrection for a fix.

Best regards,
Mack1
