97 Subaru 2.5 timing belt

The timing belt on my 2.5 came off while driving. Originally I thought it broke, but after removing the side covers, it looks like the tensioner failed (broke) and let the belt go slack. As this is an interference engine, what possible damage to the internals? Is it possible there was no damage? How does one remove the crankshaft pulley without the special Subaru pulley tool? What are my options?

Re: 97 Subaru 2.5 timing belt

you can get the car back into timing mechanically. Pull the #1 spark plug out and insert a rod into the cylinder. Rotate until the rod is at TDC, then position the crank on the hash marks for the timing, your cam should be set from the #1 cylinder.
**This is a rough timing set up**
replace the belt, reset the computer and turn it over. When your belt falls off nothing will happen to your internals, your car will just wimper sputter and eventually die.

Re: 97 Subaru 2.5 timing belt

Hi BG

Did some research and found this:

http://leemyles.com/articles/interfe...ing-belts.html

I learned something new

For subinewbi I would suggest he look into a repair manual if he wishes to make his own repairs:

Depending on your location I believe AutoZone loans tools. I have no idea where you are located, but some parts stores will loan specialty tools as a customer convenience. You will need a "puller" to remove the crank pully.
