After fitting a new starter motor to my renault trafic camper,I am experiencing a grinding noise coming from the starter.I hve since removed the starter and found teeth worn on the flywheel,Is it safe to fit another starter motor or should i change the flywheel first.

Re: Fly Wheel
Hi MICK21358,
How old and how many miles and exactly which model?? If the teeth are extremely worn, damaged or missing it is best to replace the flywheel. Years ago we used to replace the gear ring on flywheels.....if you have an automatic tranny it is called a flexplate and I think it has to be replaced as a unit. Either way, fix the flywheel/flexplate first, and have a good look at the "starter drive" on the starter itself. Best of luck, SABL |

Re: Fly Wheel
I did not notice that you already replaced the starter....sorry.
Were any shims present when you removed the starter?? They will need to be put back in with the new starter. A local GM dealer did not put the shims back in my son's Camaro when he took it in for servicing.....they denied removing the starter but it was obvious by the noise. We got the shims back in before any damage occured (got spares in my garage). |
