Re: dodge overheating

Hi happyjackie and welcome to TSF

Have you been adjusting the timing lately? If the ignition timing is too slow, it will cause an engine to overheat. Check it with a timing light.
The advance in the distributor can cause it if it sticks or fails.

If the fluid is low in the radiator, it will overheat. When the engine is cold, remove the radiator cap and fill it with the engine running. Let it run long enough for the thermostat to open and you should see water flowing in the radiator. Stop the engine, topoff the radiator fluid and put the cap back on. Then fill the reservior to the hot level mark.

These are my thoughts.

Hope it helps,
Mack1

Hi happyjackie,

Yes, it would run smooth. If you changed the timing toward slow, it would idle slower and you would have to adjust the idle screw to speed it back up.

If you have been turning the distributor (adjusting the timing) and you left it on the low side, it will run hot. If you haven't been, then it is probably not the problem. A timing light would tell you for sure.

If it runs hot only in town, and not out on the road, then it could be the cooling fan. Some have thermal clutches on them and when the air across the radiator gets to a certain heat level, the clutch starts grabbing the shaft making the fan blades rotate at the speed of the shaft. You can test this by feeling of the force necessary to rotate the fan when the car is cold and after it is hot. It will take more force to rotate it on the shaft when hot if it is working properly.

Best regards,
Mack1

Re: dodge overheating

is it really overheating? it could also be the heat sending unit, it is used to control the fans also.

Re: dodge overheating

you may have a head gasket leak. check your oil to see if there is any foaming. is the car using any coolant? that is a tell-tale sign.
