Volvo 940 GLE

The window near the front seat passenger can can be opened or closed using the switch on the driver's door. The switch on the front seat passenger can open but not close the window.

I do not want to start anything I cannot finish and was wondering is anyone out there had experienced this problem and could advise me how to proceed.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Volvo 940 GLE

I'm not familiar with your particular vehicle but it is evident that:

The motor that operates the window is functioning.
The driver's side switch is OK.
The wiring from driver's side is intact and working.

That only leaves the passenger side switch and related wiring. Make sure the wiring is connected between the passenger switch and the window motor and check for any damage in that section of wiring. Check to make sure that the switch has not accumulated any debris in it's moving parts and does not make full contact when trying to raise the window.

I'm going to guess that there is a problem with the switch. Has anyone spilled something near the switch lately?

Best of luck.

Re: Volvo 940 GLE

Thanks for a speedy reply.

Nothing has been spilt but the car is nearly 15 years old and, like you, I suspect the switch is faulty. I just cannot figure out how to get at the switch. If I have to remove door lining etc. I dread the thought of all sorts of things falling out of place.

Re: Volvo 940 GLE

I wish I had more info to pass along but, alas, I don't. Perhaps a local library has a repair manual in their reference department? Haynes or Chilton publishes many repair manuals which are inexpensive compared to parts and labor prices at most repair shops. Could be a good investment due to the age of your Volvo.

If the switch is located in the armrest it may be possible to service it by removing the armrest only.... like I said, I am not familiar with your make of car..... just a thought only.

Keep posting back and someone may offer better advice.

My System

Re: Volvo 940 GLE

Hi wersi,

Last week I had to replace the drivers side mirror on my S10 Blazer. To do that, I had to remove the door lining to get to the problem. I used my Haynes book to find out how to get the lining off. I could not have figured out how to remove it without the book. Some things, you just need specific dirrections to follow. Where to prize and where all the screws are, etc.

The best advice I could give is to get dirrections on how to remove the door panel (lining).

After that, you can use a ohm meter to determine the health of the switch.

Hope this helps,
Mack1

Re: Volvo 940 GLE

I have a 1992 Volvo 240 and the switch set will pop out of the armrest. It has spring clips at the front and rear of the set that hold it in place. A slim metal ruler slipped under the edge of the unit should pop it out.

Good luck.
