I was driving down the road and all of my lug nuts came off of my right front wheel. I drive a 1976 Chevy Blazer. the lug bolts all broke off so i need to somehow get them out and replace them. now my question is how am i going to get them out because it is a 4 wheel drive and i hear that that could be a problem because not very many people work on 4 wheel drive old trucks anymore. i dont know much about my truck because it was left for me from my father after he passed away. so if anyone could help me i would appreciate it so much!!!

Re: i need help with the lug bolts
they should just knock out of the axle with a hammer and punch. the new ones will install easy with just the hammer knocking them in place where the old ones were.
cant remember on that modle if the axle has to come out in order to replace them or not. but remove the brake drum and shoes then look and see if there is enough room behind the axle to knock the broken ones out if there isnt you will have to remove the axle then knock them out. |

Re: i need help with the lug bolts
no i dont think that anyone loosed them because the bolts all broke off with the lugs. i was told they broke off because my dad had tightened them to tight all these years. so im thinking my problem is going to occur on all four wheels. :( oh well ill just have to fix all of them i suppose. and surprisingly enough after the lug nuts all came off i drove my truck about another mile and half and my wheel stayed on. but when i got it lifted up high enough the wheel just fell off. i think someone was watchin over me lol.

Re: i need help with the lug bolts
If you do fix it yourself or have a shop do it make sure you or the shop uses a torque wrench to tighten the nuts and NOT an air wrench.

Re: i need help with the lug bolts
after giving this a little more thought the front axle should be the same as the rear on your truck with the exception of the lock in/lock out hubs.
before you take it to the shop look over the wheel assembly. if you have ever done brakes before go ahead and remove the caliper and the rotor (if the rotor is loose it may be held on by a large nut in the center not sure) on some models the rotors are just slid onto the lug bolts. after these are removed you should have a clear sight of the end of the axle. just look and see if there is enough room behind the axle to put a new lug bolt and also enough room to swing a hammer (if you dont have an air chisel). the air chisel works the best they are cheap (under 20 bucks here) if you have access to an air compressor. if there is enough room to place the new lug bolt behind the axle you wont need to remove the locking hubs. just hit the broken stud from the wheel side with a punch til it falls out, slide the new lug bolt in, and knock it in til its touching the inside of the axle. this is a simple job as long as the lug bolt can be put in from the back without removeing the axle itsself. hope this helps Bud. |

Re: i need help with the lug bolts
A picture might be worth a thousand words.. provided the wheel/tire is re.....OOPS! Caught myself there...it IS removed. Don't know what I was thinking.
I was hoping one of my older manuals would provide a clue, but no luck. They are van manuals (4WD was custom on a van back then). Your back in the early years... I'm trying to remember that far back. Does your Blazer have drum or disc brakes on the front? Does it even have locking hubs? Sometimes (back then) 4WD was just that..... 4WD fulltime (with the transfer case engaged) and no locking hubs. |
