[SOLVED] 2000 Chevy Malibu LS

Every time it rains, my Malibu seems to have troubles continuously running. At first, it will just rev up whenever I'm sitting at a STOP sign....the RPM needle will be jumping up and down between 1,000 and 2,000. Sometimes I can get away with not making a complete stop and it seems to be fine. Other times, I'll get to a complete stop and it will completely shut off. I've noticed that when I put it in reverse it shuts off immediately. Now, it has started to shut off when I'm just slowing down and approaching my stop....the problem definitely seems to stem from wetness/moisture since this only happens to my car when it rains....after it dries out it runs fine. My mechanic is going to just give it a tune-up and replace the plug wires, air filter, and probably some other stuff on Monday. He thinks the main problem is because of the plug wires......any other ideas as to what it could be?

Hi JdubStylee welcome to the forum.

My first guess would be the plug wires.

Thanks, BG. I really hope that's the problem since they are relatively cheap and easy to replace.

Re: 2000 Chevy Malibu LS

any check engine lights? if so, then have you found out what the codes are?

the things that I could immediately think of is first the Idle Air Control (IAC) valve, then the next thing I would look at is the Oxygen sensor (O2)

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by codes....but the actual check engine light is on, and that is it. I'm pretty sure the IAC was just recently replaced. I'll mention the Oxygen sensor to my mechanic. Thanks.

Re: 2000 Chevy Malibu LS

the check engine light is on, then you could go somewhere like Autozone, Schucks, they do free engine light diagnostics. The codes would be residing within the computer in the car.

I don't know about the other parts stores, you could call before going in. But when they run the scanner, then it will tell them what is going on with the car. They can also reset the system, which has also been known to help eliminate problems. This is usually done when you have had some repairs on it. If they didn't reset it, then it still is in mode.

post back on your findings, but that is what i would do, head down to the local Autozone or Schucks or equivalent

Re: 2000 Chevy Malibu LS
