Cry lighting issues with 02 cavalier

headlights don't come on (regular and drl) when car is started and put in gear headlights flash 5 or 6 times then stay off. also a clicking sound by the drl relay. we changed that relay and the headlight switch assembly but neither was the problem. all other lights work fine. any suggestions?

Check wiring to the fuse box. Not sure how the 2002 is but the 97 I had, the headlight fuse was in the cab to the left of the steering wheel. If you can get your hands behind it make sure the wires are in good.

Re: lighting issues with 02 cavalier

I have seen a lot of Cavaliers and sunfires that have broken or "green" corroded wires across the front of the vehicle usually a blue or orange wire(s). They break inbetween the two headlights. Sometimes hard to find! Older cavaliers/sunfires were bad for splices behind the drivers headlight, the newer ones are even worse, bad or broken wires all across the front between the lights.
As long as you have the basic checks compleate like fuses done, I would check wires.
Hope this helped, and hope its not too bad.

Re: lighting issues with 02 cavalier

Thanks, I'll check this also. Can I just attach another ground wire from each light if that is what it is and direct connect it to the neg. on the battery?

Re: lighting issues with 02 cavalier

No, on this system you should not by-pass any wires, you need to find and repair the problems. I believe that the ground is actually the switched signal to the lights, try to get a wiring diagram for your car.
