97 Mercury Cougar
I have an automatic Mercury CougarXR7 and when i accelerate it sometimes hops out of gear and just revs then it catches again and jumps into the wrong gear then into the right one after a rough jump from what seems to be the transmission. any ideas?

Re: 97 Mercury Cougar
Posibly the throttle valve (kicked down linkage) may be stuck so when you accelerate it's trying to go into a lower gear.I think this car still uses it but I'am not sure. It's a cable usually attached to the throttle linkage at the throttle body that runs down to the trans. Sometimes it gets stuck in one position giving the throttle pressure the upper hand in the trans instead of the governer pressure. With all the electronically controlled trans it's hard to remember witch is witch. But it would pay to look.
If it is a electronic trans you may want to scan the system to be sure it's getting the proper inputs to the PCM such as speed and throttle position. Good luck,Cardoc |
