Mistake 2002 Honda Accord ticking

I have a Honda Accord 2002 2 litre saloon. The engine make a rattling/tappity sounding noise now and again. There seems to be no rhyme or reason why as it comes and goes for no reason. I can travel hundreds of miles with the engine purring and then it will start to make this noise and after a while it disappears. The engine has done 130,000 and I have to top up regularly. it has been serviced by a Honda dealer up til about 100,000 but my local garage now services it for me as its cheaper. Has anyone got any suggestions as to what this could be.

Re: Peter Grab

there is a posibility it could be spark knock from a lower quality gas. if it is doing it after you get gas from a certain gas station.

keep a mental note of what station your using when the problem happens. if it happens a few times after getting gas from a certain place you may not want to get gas from them or use an additive if you do get gas from there.

could be something else causeing it but that should be the first thing to check since it wont cost you any money.

Re: Peter Grab

Hi all
Does it make the sound at idle or under load/road speed, gear etc.Could even be something silly like a loose spark plug(I've seen it). When it's making the noise does performance suffer.
