I think something is wrong

Well for starters, Every time I go to drive my van now, if takes about 5 seconds to shift gears. You can have your foot on the gas, but the van won't go, then like 5 seconds later it will lurch into gear. So when you are going down the highway, and trying to go faster, when it hits those gears, the engine just revs, and then finally lurches into a higher gear, then quiets down.

Also, if I am stopped on a downhill slope at a red light, my van will just die. And when I turn it back on, there is a horrible smell of exhaust, which leads me to the next issue..

I am constantly smelling exhaust fumes. I have to drive with my driver side window all the way down, but I still smell it, and sometimes almost to the point where I want to puke. I have no tailpipe system or muffler, so I dunno if that makes a difference. My van is a 92 ford aerostar.

Re: I think something is wrong

Sounds like the transmission needs a rebuild and you need to park it untill you fix the exhaust.

Re: I think something is wrong

Good Morning Chaps, yes I agree entirely with cardoc, jessman.

With vans especially if there is any doorseal leakage in the rear doors, the exhaust can accumulate quite dangerously on long runs.

I would suggest addressing both items simultaneously.

Ensure your transmission is properly filled with auto trans oil appropriately and the exhaust is properly restored.

Your machine is obviously involved with your income stream, give it every attention, affection and loving care.

Others will have different ideas.

Cheers, qldit.

Re: I think something is wrong

some people have just told me to take it to a junkyard since I only paid $500 for the van. They said I could get like $300 for it at the junkyard since the price of metal has gone up

Re: I think something is wrong

G'day jessman, whichever is your preference old chap.

I love machines and hate to see them discarded.

Never expect not to have to replace parts, most things are "fixable", often buying another machine may be a wrong step..

But cost effectivity is often a hard master.

Cheers, qldit.
