2004 Chrysler Stumbles / Stalls

My 04 T&C stumbles and sometimes stalls upon starting immediately after filling the fuel tank (full). Dealer can find no codes in the computer and has no idea of the source of the problem. Does not happen at times other than filling the tank.

Re: 2004 Chrysler Stumbles / Stalls

Good Morning dfm1wcpd, that problem sounds really wierd, I suspect many people wold not experience it due to not being able to fill their tanks these days because of the fuel cost!

I haven't heard of this problem previously.

I would suspect some involvement with the evap system and a possible overfuelling kind of problem.

I would suggest obtaining a Haynes type manual for that vehicle and determining exactly how that particular evap system functions.

This is just a guess, but holding the accellerator fully down might have effect starting in this kind of case.

Sorry no help, but there are some terribly clever fellows on this site that may have a better idea.

Cheers, qldit.

If it has a non-vented gas cap, you might see if putting a vented one on helps.

Re: 2004 Chrysler Stumbles / Stalls

Good Morning Gentlemen, I just came across an old article suggesting never to fill some vehicle tanks completely, just fill until the first fill nozzle shut-off.

Reason being that the system being completely filled to the neck can cause fuel gravitation back into the system, but I don't know how relevant this may be.

It may be worth asking the dealer about "filling the tank" and if this may have effect on your particular model.

Cheers, qldit.

Re: 2004 Chrysler Stumbles / Stalls

Good evening all
I agree it sounds like a problem with the evap system. Most likely a vapor seperator valve in tank allowing liquid fuel in the vapor purge system. When the engine starts the liquid fuel is drawn in by the purge valve causing a temp.overrich condition but maintaining a tight evap system hence no engine light or stored codes.Dealer may check for liquid fuel in vapor storage canister.
Also if you try a vented cap it will cause evap system small leak code to set.
Has your dealer checked factory TSB's for this.
Good luck with this one.

Re: 2004 Chrysler Stumbles / Stalls

Good Afternoon Gentlemen, yes cardoc, I think your info is "right on"!

I have seen people "rocking their vehicles" when fuel prices drop, to completely fill the system and thought it was not such a good idea.

Cardocs mention of tankcap type is also valid, in some systems even a tankcap "O" ring leaking or the valve leaking inside the cap can cause a code.

I do feel that some airspace in the tank may be desirable.

It sure is an interesting subject.

Cheers, qldit.

Re: 2004 Chrysler Stumbles / Stalls

Thanks for the suggestions. I know that the sealed cap is a must, because a vented fuel tank will generate trouble codes in the computer. The condition is troubling because the problem did not show itself until the car had 49,000+ miles on it.
