My speedometer on my 1984 subaru with a manual transmission reads 125 mph at all speeeds it drops to 0 mph when car is stopped. Is this a problem with the cable or gauge?

Re: speedometer reading off
Good Morning jmey, that kind of problem is normally caused by the "drag cups" in the speedometer itself, the spinning drive bearings get dry and run a little eccentrically. Sometimes a few drops of oil in the actual mechanism bearings will fix it.
Check that the flex drive cable isn't pre-loading the indicator or bent close to the indicator. (nice and straight and not too tight) It is quite a job to get access to get some oil into them, you might get another from a suitable second hand yard, probably be easier to change it. It is a mechanical indicator with a cable drive isn't it? (Some are electronic) Cheers, qldit. Last edited by qldit; 09-17-2007 at 08:28 AM. |
