electrical problems

It just started last week where all my electrical gauges, windows and ac will just turn off, and in a few minutes it will come on again, then off and on. Speedometer and RPM will also shut down. Where do I start?

Re: electrical problems

Good Afternoon darren12, this type of problem is typical when there is a thermal circuit breaker involved.
Does the on/off frequency alter if there are less accessories drawing power?

If you have one of these devices in the vehicle it will probably be located in the fuse panel in the engine compartment.

What type of vehicle is it?

These kinds of things are more common in older vehicles and often use a bi-metallic switch as a circuit overload protect device. (resets when it cools)
The contacts become resistive and generate localised heat that triggers the thing erroneously.

An Afterthought. You could try finding a nice quiet place and turning everything on without the engine running and seeing if you can hear a faint clicking of the device, you may locate it that way.

This is a guess and others will have different ideas.

Cheers, qldit.

Re: electrical problems

its a 99 jeep grand Cherokee, 103k miles. It even does it when its cool in the mornings, I thought it may be a loose ground wire, but where do i start looking? It does act like a circuit breaker when it shuts down the re-sets, Thanks, Darren12, Joplin MO

Re: electrical problems

Hey darren12,
Start at the battery, make sure connection are"good" and clean(not overly tight). Follow the ground(black wire ) to the block usually near the bell housing on the tranny.
The check and follow the power cable to the alternator, also check the connections under neath on the starter all should be clean and good.
Have you done any work on it lately that might have caused this to happen, like replaced a fuse.... ?
Next go to the fuse panel (both) one inside and should be one out side too. Make sure that none (fuses) are lose or move to easily, I've seen that before on a car the radio would go on and off.
Hope we helped you!
