Re: 97 grand am

Good Evening torrieclark, I am not familiar with that particular radio but generally there are two kinds of illumination on modern car radios, the surround back plate is often illuminated with the dash panel lamps and the dial back lighting is powered when the radio is switched on.
Generally in both instances the radio would have to be removed from the vehicle and dismantled to replace the illumination devices. In some cases they may be incandescent types and others may use LED types.

Generally these illuminating devices are not really a major job to replace.

With regard to the window motor, these are generally a sealed unit and usually not repairable, they can be tested by directly connecting power to that specific motor wiring. But this needs care and a temporarily fused wire, (wire from the battery with a 30 amp fuse in line) and some other temporary connections.

Quite often the window tracks may be too tight to allow the window to move properly and the motor may stall. Usually if the motor tries to drive, the problem is in the tracks or is caused by system stiction of some type.
If the window is trying to drive or making a noise when selected to operate, this may be the case, if there is no noise or clicking when the switch is selected, the actual switch may be defective.
The windows are generally powered from a common source so if one doesn't operate the problem is generally the switch or motor. There is usually a disconnect plug located within the door so that the motor assembly can be easily disconnected, it may be worth ensuring it is in good condition and connected.

I often obtain replacement motors from auto wrecking yards and adapt them if needed.
The drivers side door motor is usually the one that has the most wear and most likely to fail so that method does involve a bit of work in adapting another.

Any work on a window drive mechanism needs a lot of care, there is a counter-weight spring that packs a fair amount of power for the uninitiated and it is a fair amount of work getting the mechanism out and refitting it. It can be "bitey" on fingers!!

If there is any side intrusion airbag fitted in the door, the maintenance manual safety procedures need to be carefully followed.

Cheers, qldit.

Re: 97 grand am

There is some obstruction I think, but an airbag on a 97 model is quite unusual

Re: 97 grand am

Good Evening Tony.b99, agreed, but others may use this material for other vehicles, so that is the reason it is mentioned.

Cheers, qldit.

Re: 97 grand am

Hey torrieclark!
For the GM radios they usually have two fuses for them, you might check to see if the second one is out? This may or may not be causing the problem.

Hope we helped you if so let us know.
