Re: 96 saturn
I have a 98 Saturn.
Mine misfired and we had to change plugs and clean out where you screw them in.

Re: 96 saturn
Good Morning TONY123, it is common for aged sparkplug leads to cause misfiring, as you will notice they usually do not have actual wire inside them but various forms of conductive resistive substance.
With constant vibration these leads often generate open circuit sections and cause erratic running, especially when the engine is under load. Commonly when this problem exists it can cause arcing inside the distributor cap or coil pack, so it is worthwhile considering routinely replacing these leads, even as a preventative maintenance procedure every 5 years or so, dependent on how well they are supported. In engines where the spark plugs are buried deep inside the head (where the leads enter insulated tubes and go through the rocker cover) the plastic insulators also often break down, especially where sparkplugs are never changed. (the gaps become enormous so the high voltage seeks an easier path) You can normally measure the actual resistance of these leads with an ohmmeter to get an idea, and carefully inspecting the insulating tubes for cracks caused by arcing are tell-tale. When faulty leads are common, it is also common to find ignition modules (pointless igns when used) are adversely affected. You have done well with a DOHC engine, some of them can be very complicated. How did you time the cam, using a manual? Cheers, qldit. |

Re: 96 saturn
Good Evening Tony, the normal firing order for a 4 cylinder is 1342, if you have any crossed over it will normally still run but have low power and an erratic misfire which is constantly present.
You only ever get caught once with this! LOL!! (Don't ask me how I know this!!) Well done with all the work, as a cam timing back-check TDC should be present with 1 or 4 cylinder valves perfectly "rocking". How did you go setting all those tappets? That is a pain of a job! Cheers, qldit. |
