Question Subaru Forester Engine Compatibility

I'm trying to replace a 1999 2.5 DOHC Subaru Engine with another used or rebuilt engine. Will any other models year engine replace this 5 speed standard transmission vehicle? " Dealer says the book says no," Any others experimented?

Thanks

Re: Subaru Forester Engine Compatibility

Good Morning lorencoe, Naturally it would probably be easier to simply repair or fit the same model engine, but I would suggest getting the engine on the bench and profiling the transmission mount webbing and flywheel in comparison and physically checking with other engines, I doubt if many people have attempted such an alteration.
From my experience those vehicles performed quite well, but there are a lot of them appearing in the wrecking yards these days, with age they become expensive to maintain.

So far as I am concerned generally, virtually any similar engine can be fitted to replace other motors using an adapter plate if neccessary.
This could involve a fair bit of work making and a few headaches with mounts, manifolds and exhaust etc., if they are different.

I haven't done much work on those models and never even attempted to undertake a motor removal on one, so can't positively give an answer.

Others will have different ideas.

Cheers, qldit.
