High Idle!

I've been having a problem latley with my moms 89 Lincoln...Sometimes when I let it idle in drive it goes about 15 MPH...Usually its about <5...And when I put it in nuetral and let off the gas it sounds as if im holding the peddle down some ways..Any ideas? When Im driving and I slow down with the brake I also feel it try to jerk back the it kinda gently lunges foward and repeats a few times..

that is a very dangerous situation. it could be as simple as a stuck throttle linkage, or as complicated as a defect/malfunction in the fuel injection system.

The car is very old but after awhile it seems to just stop doing that...Then it will come back after a few months..Strange though. I'll just take it to the local mechanic and ask em about it. Thanks

if you're not mechanically inclined, then you need to find somebody who is, to check the two things that i mentioned.
there are tools that diagnose the fuel injection system. they're called scanners. i just bought a vehicle and i am in the process of having my vehicle scanned. not only does it show specific parts that are defective, but it also shows parts that are beginning to malfunction. there is also the possibility of the fuel pump malfunctioning. in many cases, the diagnosis is twice the work as the actual repair.

My System

Probably a sticky idle air control motor. These usually get carboned up and require cleaning.

Fords are notorious for doing this.

Quick addition....mechanic told me today that a bad throttle position sensor will make it act that way as well.

Does this sound like anything THAT serious? Like nothing that could lead to anything too dangerous anytime in the future? I know it needs to be looked at but it's not on my list of important things to do yet
