88 Chevy Idle
Allright, I'm stumped, and have been. When cold weather hits, my truck won't idle. Temps in the forties, the truck will die at stop signs. Temp in 60's, normal idle. I go out and start it in the mornings, it won't idle where it can warm up.
The truck is TBI. When it gets cold, there is a idler adjustment, kinda like a light switch string with the little balls, and I move it back two balls, and it will idle. The truck's check engine light soon does not come on. No warning lights or anything come on. It'll just die. If I don't set the idle up, I just slip it in netural and keep my foot lightly on the gas so it doesn't die, and slip it back into drive at stop signs. Any ideas, suggestions, tips, tricks, check this out, have you wiggled this, maybe this is broke would be helpful. Not that huge of a deal to me, since I can just turn up the idler, but want to see what anybody comes up with. |

Air idle control motor. The temp sensor on GM TBI can play havoc with idle. condensation inside the distributor, these ignition systems are harder on cap and rotor combos than any ever produced.
Finally, injectors get bad, inlet screens get clogged. GP sorenson sell an injector that is sold as a replacement part, # 800-1807N. If Your originals are#'s #17089045, 17089046, 17090022, 17090061, 17112075, 17112078, 17112299, 17112300. These are nice, they have a raised outlet and a true swirl pattern. At $120 a set they'll pay fer themselves in fuel quickly, not to mention the gains in response and power. I've spent a lot of time R&D-ing GM TBI. My '89 Formula picked up 47 rear wheel HP and 7 MPG from an old 305. The injectors were the bulk of My cost. Check out this page http://www.thirdgen.org/technical-articles |
