89 ford probe 2.2

We have a probe it is all stock we run as a race car.The last time we ran it it started dieing at 4500 rpms consistantly!Since then I have changed the mass air sensor, fuel pump, distrib.,fuel filter.Still no change. We can set in the garage and run the eng up to 4000 rpms and it is smooth and fine but as soon as it hits 4500 it dies,it will start right back as soon as we hit the starter.I am stumped, and dont know what else to do.Can someone give some ideas please?

Acting almost like a rev limiter is on it?

From what I am told, there is a rev limiter in the computer but it only makes the eng cut out at a lot higher rpm to keep from blowing the eng. This is acting like you turn off the ignition.

Need to isolate if the problem is fuel or ignition!

Starting fluid works well, just be careful.

Also put a Voltmeter on the battery to see if the charging Voltage starts to climb over 16 Volts at higher RPM.

definetly fuel, used ether as soon as it died, give it a shot, and it fired right back up.As for the voltage, when the car is idleing it is showing about 12 volts and when it gets to 4500 it is showing 13.6 volts.Baffles the fire out of me!!!!!!!

Now that you have determined it is fuel, you need to find out why the fuel is shutting down.

Is the fuel pump shutting off or is fuel delivery shutting off?

Maybe there is an oil pressure cut out for the fuel pump that is shutting the fuel pump power off?

I feel like fuel delivery is shutting down because we put a gauge on it and it held pressure as it died and even after it was dead.

WILL LOW VOLTAGE CAUSE THIS PROBLEM? I found some bad wires on the alt. and the plug was not in all the way,I fixed all of this and now it is charging 14.6 volts instead of 12.2 and now it is dieing at 5500 instead of 4500.I am charging the system over night to get max power.Could low voltage cause this problem?

Low Voltage could cause some problems as well.

12.2 Volts is really a dead or bad battery. 12.6 should be a normal 12 Volt battery Voltage at full charge.

Any Voltage outside of the normal expected window could cause strange and unexpected problems.

Also it may be possibly if the alternator is putting out too much AC content, this could cause issues. If you have a bad battery, you may not get good filtering.

Try putting a different battery in, or hooking up jumper cables to a good battery or another car to have an additional load on the alternator.

Check grounds or add additional ones.

Check other connectors, as at these RPM's vibration could cause problems as well.

Good luck, seems like you are making some progress.
