1987 saab turbo 900
i bought this 1987 saab turbo 900 for 500 bucks...it needs a new transmission and possibly i might have to buy a clutch kit for it....other than that everything is fine with im i think up to this point...i dont know much about cars but i was kept being told its a good deal by family and friends and such...im not to sure if i got out good...cause now im reading mroe about them saabs have a lot of transmission problems and im afraid that ill have to keep replacing it...do you know if this is true that they realing do have a lot of transmission problems
also wondering if you think this so far is a good deal...the transmission could go from 400-700 dollars and if i do go with the clutch kit it would vary from another 150-250 at most....anyone with a lil car history wanna help out....thanks for the info in advance...peace |

Can you confirm the transmission is between $400-$700 ? This seams VERY cheap to me as it's an import. Is it rebuilt or used? Sabbs are known for transmission problems and can continue to be problematic in the future even after it's replaced. While the selling price of the car was low....this could "Nickel an Dime" you to death to keep it street worthy.

i dont think you can get a new transmission as from what im told anyway
so im guessing it would be used i dunno ive already spent the money and bought the car so i think im just gonna go with the flow of things...can only go upward from here but it is going to cost me a lot to fix my car up ive heard that term a lot recently by the way..."nickle and dime" i think its funny you used it |

This brings me back about 11 years ago. A buddy of my had a 88 Saab 900 turbo. Well his tranny went out. It to was a manual. He check around tring to find one. Well back then the salvage yards we're on central communications system, they called the hot line, because the internet wasn't as big as it is now. Well he found out the the were only 2 in the country and the cheapest one was in NY for $1500.
I also remember him telling me that the top of the transmission was also the oil pan for the engine. Have fun. |

so i found a parts car and found a transmission that i can change but found out it might only be the clutch..either way now i got a parts car for it and if i need anything off the other one ill have it...and the transmission is good on it...also i got into the car for the first time today and ripped everything out to get to the clutch
ill see if i can get some pictures cause its hard to explain but does anyone else have expierence with old saabs...cause this seems a little weird but im going ahead with it anyway...the clutch plate is no where near the flywheel and to get to it i dont even once toutch the transmission...its in the very front of the car right behind the fans...i jsut ripped the hood, radiator, turbo, and fans out to get to the clutch....its in the very front of the car...i know this isnt normal but doesnt the lfy wheel have to spin the plate? ...well ill be under it hopefully again tomorrow putting everything into it...wish me luck...everyones telling me im gonna mess it up |

ok now that doesnt make any sense, considering the clutch is what makes the transmission work... it is what transmits the engines power to the trans. are you sure that was the clutch plate?

i know it doesnt make any sense that what anyone and everyone has said about it after litterally looking at it...ill go down and take some pictures today i would have it back together but it wasnt the clutch that was the problem turns out that the clutch disc was just a lil worn out nothing to big and more than likely it was just air in the hydrolics due to a bad clutch master cylinder
i spent about 6 hours trying to get the brake fluid to pump through to the slave cylinder but no luck...im picking up my master cylinder tommorrow...and as for the plate...it is toutching the flywheel i had no idea what i was saying before ignore that... anyway let me go get some pictures later |

ok so i got everything back together just have to rig it from battery to starter.....got this down...
just kinda pissed cause after all the work i put into the damn car every part i took out was in good shape still it was jsut a LOT of air in the line from the master clutch cylnder to the slave cylnder....i basically to pump the brake fluid through the hydrolic system i would... open the line have some one press and hold the clutch... close the line... release the clutch... repeated over a long period of time till i got it pumping with no air anyway now that i put days into this damn thing my starters solenoid is shot or something so im gonna rig it up with a push button for now...id like to drive it finally... what pisses me off the most is that everything I took out was still good...i mean im happy its got all these new parts but $H)T anyway i figured this very strange car out...and just take my word about the clutch not even toutching the transmission...wierd but thats how thes foriegn cars are built i guess...engine *** backwards and just enough room for everything to squeez under the hood...nice tight fit |

when i hook up the wires to finish my long project of getting this thing together ill grab some snap shots and post them for you all and maybe i grab some shots from the other saab i got so u can get a better idea cause if you know saabs at all everything just kinda fits under the hood like a puzle...everything fits almost seeming perfectly...so it would be hard to see unless i took a bunch of things apart...which i wont mind doing on the other car

Re: 1987 saab turbo 900
i helped a guy work on his saab and the engine out put shaft is in the front and the clutch is on the front of the engine and then the shaft from the clutch goes out (towards) the front and then it goes into a gear box (not the transmission) and theres a sprocket and chain that goes down i think it was called a jack chain but any ways it went down and went towards the back into the transmission it was really different im also trying to help him find a transmission because he thought the clutch went bad so we we replacing it and while it was out the car still would not move so we drained the transmission and metal parts started coming out does any one know what year transmissions fit its a 87 5 speed standard thanks mike
