How to Backup your boot hard drive

If you wish to read the original article you can find it by clicking on this link

Yet another great handy guide; and what I personally deem as an indispensable thing to do for every PC user: Create an image of your boot drive, and protect yourself from losing your mind when things go south... Congratulations, John - we ALL need that!

Yes, there are many. Go to Google and type in boot CD. The advantage of using BartPE is that the way I describe loads the DriveImage software that you need to copy the image back to your boot drive.

Thankyou John, I have Acronis true image, yhay I use for the image..They also recomend BartPE for copying to the boot drive, but you cannot create the builder with 2K it has to be with XP, so I as just wondering if the program you discribe would do it without BartPE??????

Yes you can. You would need to reinstall 2K then download and install DriveImage. You can then copy the drive image back to your boot drive.

The purpose of the boot CD is to allow you to boot into a Windows environment in the unlikely event that your boot hard drive (usually Drive C) becomes damaged. At the same time it loads the DriveImage program so that after reformatting your boot hard drive, you can copy everything back from your backup hard drive to your boot hard drive. If you can't make a BartPE boot CD (I think you'll find you can make one in 2K; look here) and your boot hard drive fails, you will have to reinstall your operating system from your Windows CD. Once everything is working again, you will have to download the DriveImage program in order to copy your original image from your backup drive. This is more complicated than having a boot CD.
If you really don't want to make a boot CD, then follow the instructions I give in this link except that you can ignore steps 12 and 18 and simply keep the clone as a backup in case of disaster.

Thanks Kalim. You'll just have to upgrade I'm afraid. XP should be cheap now that Vista is out

Regards,
John.

Hi. I didn't realise that DriveImage wouldn't run under 2K. Sorry about that.

John.

I don't actually need it for myself John.
For Win 2K maybe this will work (very similar): http://www.drive-image.com/

The trial is fully functional. Here's the manual (PDF link) with screenshots and instructions.

Don't know anything about that program. I'll have a look.

Alternatively, XXClone works with all 32 bit Windows from 95 on. See my other article on XXClone

Bart PE and Driveimage XML

Hi

Great article, but I cannot see my other DVD drive (containing my Driveimage backup to restore from ) after I boot the Bart live cd - any ideas ?. I have booted the PE cd off this drive with no problems or could the format be wrong on the DVD containing my image files ?.

Thanks

Hi there,
I'm a bit confused, but I often am at this time in the morning. I don't understand how your image is on a DVD. It should be on another hard drive.

Regards,
Pilot.

Re: How to Backup your boot hard drive

Sorry - should have included the fact that I burn't the DI files to a DVD for a baremetal recovery - I think it's a DVD format problem with the bios.

Thanks

Nice article John. One thing though, this link about slipstreaming XP no longer works:

I can't seem to find it. Perhaps GeekGirl knows where it went.
