Installation Guide for IE-Spyad
Hi all -
IE-Spyad has recently changed from a batch file install to using a free Internet Explorer zone management utility available from funkytoad, ZonedOut. Here's a rough draft. My cropping of images is a bit untidy, and I think ultimately it may be better to change the default unzip location of ie-spyad_zo.exe to the same directory as ZonedOut, or vice versa, (indicated below) as ZonedOut will always open to it's own directory. Or, perhaps that opens things up to more difficulty, and the user will get lost. So perhaps leaving it like below is best. Let me know what you think. ------------------------------------------- Installation guide for IE-Spyad IE-Spyad places more than 4000 dubious websites and domains in the IE Restricted list. This severely impairs attempts to infect your system. To use the IE-SPYAD for ZonedOut "Restricted sites" lists you must also download ZonedOut by funkytoad, a free Internet Explorer zone management utility: Download the self-extracting exe version of IE-Spyad: http://www.spywarewarrior.com/uiuc/res/ie-spyad_zo.exe Double click on the file you just saved. It will appear like this: ![]() Click on the unzip button. The files will be extracted to C:\iespyad_zo by default. Download ZonedOut from the author's site (link below), and extract to a location you can easily find. (or, extract directly to C:\iespyad_zo) http://www.funkytoad.com/content/view/15/33/ Doubleclick on ZonedOut.exe to run it. Select Menu>Import/Export Sites>Import from File ![]() Browse to C:\iespyad_zo folder, using the "Up one level" button: ![]() Select ie-ads.txt ![]() A message box will appear, click OK. ![]() ![]() Once ZonedOut has checked for failures, it will let you know that it's done. ![]() Close ZonedOut. That's it. There are other imports you can do from within the ie-spyad_zo folder. Take time and review the readme file. The process is the same. © 2007 techsupportforum.com ![]() ----------------------------------------- Would like it if some of you would use these instructions, and tell me which way you think works best, along with any other critiquing. Cheers!

Re: Installation Guide for IE-Spyad
Thanks Bob. When I get my modem working properly I'll try it. I'll also redo the pics for you.
Regards, John.

Re: Installation Guide for IE-Spyad
Bob authored an article - and a most useful one?
(1) I hereby resolve that I will follow it to the letter (I haven't installed IE Spyad yet, so that's the perfect opportunity). (2) Thanks!

Re: Installation Guide for IE-Spyad
LOL, out of sheer necessity.
We proscribe IE-Spyad as part of the 5 Steps, and with the recent change, we were running into many questions....so, an Article, and a link to it in our 5 Steps seems in order, rather than a lengthy post in the 5 steps.

Re: Installation Guide for IE-Spyad
Hehe, whenever you're doing anything like installing a new application, you're not really supposed to use the machine for anything else.
Stands to reason it would slow down browsing, as IE-Spyad is placing and checking thousands of entries in the Zones. Thanks for that comment though. If it seems consistent among those here who run the install, perhaps a point should be made about that.

Re: Installation Guide for IE-Spyad
I was going to install it in order to get pics for your article, but I use the MVPS Hosts file. Will they clash? If so, which is the better one to use?

Re: Installation Guide for IE-Spyad
I use both with no sense of conflict. They apply their actions to different areas of the OS, though they do similar things.

Re: Installation Guide for IE-Spyad
Thanks Bob. I'll try it this weekend. BTW, rather than cleaning up the images (it always shows) use Alt+Printscreen rather than Printscreen to save the active window. For those where you can't, for example where you need to show a fly-out menu that would disappear if you pressed Alt, try and position the active window over a clear background as it's almost impossible to crop exactly to the line.
Regards, John.

Re: Installation Guide for IE-Spyad
Thanks, John.
Those context menus are tough. I think those all look pretty decent now. I'm only using Paint and TheGimp for editing. I can't seem to find any nifty arrow objects in either of those for the one image. Hand-drawn is never perfect for me.

Re: Installation Guide for IE-Spyad
Hi Bob,
I've re-done the pics (including your red arrow ) and also added the one in that says it's finished. I've also added the copyrighting. If you're not happy with anything let me know.Cheers, John.

Re: Installation Guide for IE-Spyad
First, Thanks, it's looking much better.
Second....I gotta know...what are you using for software, and how did you grab image #2? Third...image #4, can you please highlight ie-ads.txt in the window, so it shows up in the file to open line? Like this:

Re: Installation Guide for IE-Spyad
Hi Bob,
Image 4 changed as requested. For straightforward pics and for the copyrighting, like you, I use Paint. For more difficult ones I use Corel PaintShopPro. To get the second image, I made sure the relevant window was over a plain white background then did a full screenshot and cropped it. As it's over a white background the cropped area can be large enough to include the flyout menu. It also means you dont have to worry about unwanted background text. Regards, John.

Re: Installation Guide for IE-Spyad
Thanks, John.
And thanks, also, Dave. Good to know it's clear. If everyone is satisfied with the instructions, I think we can let it go live. This is just for fun: I get it now.

Re: Installation Guide for IE-Spyad
Oh, John....one last minor tweak request.
Image three, I had my mouse cursor hovering over the Up One Level button, so the dialog was showing as well as using an arrow....like this:

Re: Installation Guide for IE-Spyad
No problem. I'll sort it. I'll even try and getting a pointer to show.

Re: Installation Guide for IE-Spyad
Not a brilliant copy of a mouse pointer, but the actual one's not that good either.

Re: Installation Guide for IE-Spyad
Heheh....do you think the red arrow (or the cursor replica, for that matter) is redundant?
Perhaps strike the red arrow now? Open to thoughts on that.
