Re: Installation Guide for IE-Spyad

What about the other files? You say study the read-me file, but having looked at it, I doubt if many will bother. From a cursory read of it I wonder if it's worth mentioning that previous versions should be removed and how to do it, and also a brief description of what the other files do?

Re: Installation Guide for IE-Spyad

You're probably right about the uninstall. I'll put that together. Thinking about that means we'll change one image we're already using. I have it already, and will post it for you to copyright and upload to imagehosting.

As far as the other files go, a brief description should be fine. There's the readme, and the link to the main tool site. If they get installed, great, if they don't, that's fine too. Main thing is for ie-ads.txt to get installed. I don't want it to get too large, or they'll get lost in that, too.

I suppose I should mention briefly about updates, too, but again, that's on the IE-Spyad site. To be thorough, I'll put that together also.

Re: Installation Guide for IE-Spyad

Installation guide for IE-Spyad

IE-Spyad places more than 4000 dubious websites and domains in the IE Restricted list. This severely impairs attempts to infect your system.

To use the IE-SPYAD for ZonedOut "Restricted sites" lists you must also download ZonedOut by funkytoad, a free Internet Explorer zone management utility:

Download the self-extracting executable version of IE-Spyad:

http://www.spywarewarrior.com/uiuc/res/ie-spyad_zo.exe

Double click on the file you just saved. It will appear like this:

Click on the unzip button. The files will be extracted to C:\iespyad_zo by default.

Download ZonedOut from the author's site (link below), and extract to a location you can easily find. (or, extract directly to C:\iespyad_zo)

http://www.funkytoad.com/content/view/15/33/

If you have a previous version of IE-Spyad installed, you must first uninstall it. If you do not have a previous version installed, skip to Section 2.

Section 1 - Uninstall Old Versions of IE-Spyad
  • Note: Custom Sites Lists

If you have created you own custom Restricted Sites list, you will need to rebuild it after completing the install of IE-Spyad for ZonedOut.

  • Note: IE-SPYAD2

ZonedOut will not uninstall IE-SPYAD2. To uninstall IE-SPYAD2, use the uninstaller that came with IE-SPYAD2.

Uninstall previous versions of IE-Spyad.

To do this, use the ZonedOut utility.

Doubleclick on ZonedOut.exe to run it.

Select Menu > Remove Sites > Remove All

While the uninstall is progressing, it will look like this:

Once the uninstall is complete, you will have a clean slate, which will look like this:

You are now ready to install the new version of IE-Spyad. Proceed to Section 2.

Section 2 - Install IE-Spyad

Installing ie-ads.txt

Doubleclick on ZonedOut.exe to run it.

Select Menu>Import/Export Sites>Import from File

Browse to C:\iespyad_zo folder, using the "Up one level" button:

Select ie-ads.txt

A message box will appear, click OK.

Once ZonedOut has checked for failures, it will let you know that it's done.

Close ZonedOut. That's it.

Section 3 - Installing Optional protections.

There are other imports you can do from within the ie-spyad_zo folder. Take time and review the readme file. The process is the same.

Using the same procedure above, you can install the additional protections afforded by the adults.txt file and the IE-NFE.txt file. Review the readme file to fully understand what these are.

Briefly, adults.txt places many adult sites into the Restricted Zones.

IE-NFE.txt, or Not For Everyone, places additional sites into the Restricted Zones. Some may want these restricted, some may not. Take the time to review the readme file to make your decision. To fully implement these protections, some editing of the IE-NFE.txt file needs to take place. Lines with the double-asterisks and space (** ) at the beginning will not be loaded by default.

Section 4 - Updating IE-Spyad for ZonedOut.

Once a month or so, you may want to visit the IE-Spyad site to get updates.

To update IE-Spyad for ZonedOut, simply download the self-extracting executable version of IE-Spyad once again, and repeat the procedures for uninstalling old versions, and installing new versions. At this time, only ie-ads.txt and IE-NFE.txt are updated.

Re: Installation Guide for IE-Spyad

No worries, John.

My rough draft has already helped members and helpers alike, but we want this to be a great read.

It looks fine to me Bob. I'll pass it over to Dave for final formatting and publishing.
