Cool Tutorial: How-To create a nona-boot system (9 OS)

Hello

jessa_jr has been bugging me to do this, and I'm sick of PMs so I've decided to write this tutorial.

It will start off incomplete (of course) but I will continually be editing it to get it just right.

Firstly, you'll need installation CDs/DVDs for the following Operating Systems;
  • Mac OS X Leopard
  • Windows Vista 64-bit
  • Windows 7 64-bit
  • Windows Server 2008 64-bit
  • Linux (I will be using Ubuntu 64-bit)
  • Linux (I will be using Fedora 64-bit)
  • Solaris
  • FreeBSD 64-bit
  • OpenSolaris

Now, here's what to do.

If using MBR (most likely);
  1. Create MBR partition table
  2. Create 9 partitions, (primaries: Mac, Windows Server, Solaris)
  3. My file-system recommendations are as follows;
    • Mac - HFS+
    • NTFS - Windows (all versions)
    • Ext3 - Linux (all versions)
    • ZFS - Solaris
    • ZFS or UFS - FreeBSD
    • ZFS - OpenSolaris
  4. Check that partitioning and formatting has been done as listed above
  5. Install all OSs, in any order, as long as the primaries are installed 1st (for the boot-loaders, especially with Windows)
  6. Have fun without your nona-boot system!

If using GPT;
  1. Create GPT partition table
  2. Create 9 partitions
  3. My file-system recommendations are as follows;
    • Mac - HFS+
    • NTFS - Windows (all versions)
    • Ext3 - Linux (all versions)
    • ZFS - Solaris
    • ZFS or UFS - FreeBSD
    • ZFS - OpenSolaris
  4. Check that partitioning and formatting has been done as listed above
  5. Install all OSs, in any order
  6. Have fun without your nona-boot system!

It may look easy from the way I've set it out, however it took me a longtime to work everything out!

Good Luck!

Panarchy

PS: With Windows it doesn't matter which you install as primary, as long as at least 1 Windows is primary!

PPS: If you try this, and it works, please inform everyone! It's worked for me... so far!

NOTE: If for whatever reason your nona-boot setup becomes a non-boot setup, tell me, and I'll do all I can to make your non-boot nona once more!

Hi Panarchy,

Where did you install the freebsd, can I install it in the extended partition?

When I install the opensolaris/solaris its just prompt me with grub>. What is the next thing that I will do?

What boot manager did you use? I'm planning to used easybcd.

Installing freebsd in extended partition / Installing solaris/opensolaris

Hi!

Is there anyone knows how to install freebsd to extended partition? Can you give me a guide that for example I already partition my extended partition with 6 partition and I want to install it to the first partition in my extended partition.

Solaris/Opensolaris
How to install open solaris/opensolaris to an extended partition. When I boot the cd I just prompt by a "grub>", what is the next thing to do?

Anyhelp from the experts. Thank you very much.

Post Re: Tutorial: How-To create a nona-boot system (9 OS)

Hi Mate,

As of a couple of hours ago, I have installed everyone operating system I listed before, (Mac, Vista, Windows 7, Windows Server, Fedora 10 & Ubuntu 8.10... all 64-bit except Mac...), except Solaris, FreeBSD & OpenSolaris.

Give me another day or 2 to get back to you.

In relation to your boot-loader question, I plan on making all boot-menus usable (multiple levels of redundancy). My BCD is currently fully functional, and I am working on making the GRUB full-functional... though I'll wait till I've installed the ZFS compatible GRUBs first.

Wish me luck!

Panarchy

Hi Panarchy,

Why are you not replying for a weeks now. Did you manage to install it perfectly? How? How did you install freebsd opensolaris and solaris? Did you install it on the secondary partition.

The GRUB-devel team are just about to official commit the FreeBSD 64-bit kernel patch (adds support to GRUB2)

I've also started work, so I won't have as much time to work on my 'hobbies'.

What does it means, is this applicable also to x86 platform or 32 bit. My only problem now is how to install solaris and opensolaris in the extended partition. I install freebsd in the primary but still have problem because I dont know how to install kde or gnome. Im just stuck with the $ prompt.

Oh, if you follow my thread: http://forums.freebsd.org/showthread.php?t=3194&page=2 it tells you how to install FreeBSD onto a Logical Partition.

Once you have everything installed onto a Logical Partition, I'll be able to help you out.

Re: Tutorial: How-To create a nona-boot system (9 OS)

I hope I can digg it because I dont understand some techy stuff. If you can write a more easier "how-to" with pictures it can be a great help for me. How about the solaris/opensolaris.
