switching between desktop behaviors/enviroments??

well i'm kind of having this problem where i logged into a lab's computer (unix / sun) at school for the first time and when i gave me the choice between java and default behavior i choose default behavior and checked the don't show again message but instead of getting the normal desktop i got a desktop with a rectangular toolbar on the bottom??

how do i fix this the people in the lab tried using ctrl / shift /tab / ! but it did not work...

i'm kind of a newbie at this ... help?

Welcome to TSF!!

This just looks like a very paired down version of KDE one of the *nix GUI's. Without seeing the exact desktop, I can't really diagnose what the problem is. If you could get a picture of it and post it up here then that would be wonderfull.

I know very little about Unix, but isn't there a utility called switchdesk that will let you switch desktop environments? Maybe it's restricted to redhat/fedora only I don't know (you seem to be on Solaris). But you could always give it a try in a terminal window. When you log off and back on, do you mean you don't get that choice again? Before you type in your username and password, there's sometimes other buttons and menus that let you pick a desktop environment, so fiddle around with those to see.
