Comparing operating systems information

Hi there,

I am new here and doing a project and researching information on operating systems and writing about there advantages and disadvantages over different operating systems, I have found information but seems to be dated while searching so wondering if somebody could provide me with some up to date information.

Could people please tell add some advantages and disadvantages for these over each other.

DOS (not MS-DOS)

Windows XP & Vista (vista not as much too new)

Linux

Mac OS X

Thanks in advance for your help

Re: Comparing operating systems information

well lets start with dos. Dos is quite stable, and never crashed when I used it. Not much flexibility however, and did not allow long file names. windos XP is quite stable as well, and better networking cabilities. Because its quite popular, you shouldnt find any problems ocating drivers for it, and most programs work well with it. some drawbacks include, viruses targetting windows xp. A ton of spyware, and u need to have security software installed. Mac OS is quite beautiful, and also quite stable. Because its not as main stream as windows, there arent many viruses written for it, and not targetted by hackers. However there arent as many programs written for it, and the end user is limitted to a sertain group of software written specifically for the Mac. Linix is a great OS, because its free, and stable. However, not common thus having to look harder for compatible programs. Also has many bugs that need to be worked out.
Hope this helps

Re: Comparing operating systems information

please also note that apple can run OSX, X11 (linux, you can install most version of linux on any ppc or mactel), Terminal (bash, csh, ksh, etc unix shell), and XP/Vista (which has a msdos shell) all at once (not speedy), or it can run any of these individually where it is does get the full attention of the machine.
