Recovering files/folders/data/usernames etc

I have a broken windows based laptop.

I did ask a friend to recover my files/folders/data/usernames etc from my windows based laptop (from HD) to my new mac.

Initially, at the set up I saw he did recover all (browser data/usernames), there were some issues with the smoothness of the browser. So he went back and re-did it all again.

Now its very smoothly running, the funny thing is he was able even to recover very old browser data/usernames. That I havent, used for 2 years but somehow all recent data/usernames(about half to 1 year old) somehow are gone.

How can I go back and recover all back as it used to be in my old laptop?

(I have checked all forums from various sources, and tried what was suggested. I just cant figure out what went wrong, I need a specific guidance what the main issue here is, to solve this problem!)

Many thanks for any useful suggestions.
