Cannot view SOME web pages
Help! For some reason, I cannot access certain web pages. It doesn't matter what browser I use or computer (I have a wireless broadband modem which has 2 computers connected to it - both computers have the same problem). I cannot download updates for anti virus or microsoft, but as you can see I am connected because I am on this forum! This started happening for no apparent reason and now I cannot access some really huge sites - (apple.com for one) and it is getting really frustrating. When I type in a web address one of 2 things happen: it takes about 5 minutes to load and then the screen says "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage",
other times it takes about the same time and the site comes up as simple html (i think thats what its called) for all the links etc. At first I thought the sites were down but after a day or so it was all a bit coincidental and then other people were loading the pages just fine. If anyone could help that would be great! |

Re: Cannot view SOME web pages
Hi,
I am going to do a little network diag to see what we can do for you here in this forum, but I might move this to the network forum. Can you tell me what brand and model of wireless router you have? Do you have any computers connected via ethernet cable too? I would like to know what happens when you enter this into terminal: Code:
ipconfig /all Code:
ping 66.102.1.47 Cheers!

Re: Cannot view SOME web pages
Thanks for the quick reply. The modem is a 2wire 2701H6V-W. All computers are connected via wireless. This is what came up when entering ipconfig /all:

Re: Cannot view SOME web pages
Hi,
Thank you for that information! You say that you can't access some websites, have you checked to make sure that your firewall isn't blocking them or that another piece of software isn't blocking them. Cheers!

Re: Cannot view SOME web pages
I would just add that Peer Guardian will block you from downloading drivers on Dell's site. Some sites act strange when you use Firefox instead of Internet Explorer. Example: Register an account on thePirateBay with Firefox and you will NEVER get the expected email to confirm the account. This is probably not it but test disabling pop ups.

Re: Cannot view SOME web pages
Hey wmorri,
Hypothetically if the only problem in the chain was some sort of DSL router failure or cabling failure inside one's home, what would be the tell tale or definitive sign(s) when you do an ipconfig /all test or ipconfig test? |

Re: Cannot view SOME web pages
Blade,
If you look at an ipconfig and see that your ip is 169.254.*.*, then you can bet that there is a problem with a the connection, whether it is with the modem or router that isn't as easy, but you can usuall tell by doing power cycles to start and then try removing different pieces of hardware and see what the outcome is. cheers!

Re: Cannot view SOME web pages
And if you see that your ip is there (example: 169.254), is it possible that a software program could somehow be blocking an internet connection via AOL and via Internet Explorer (example: firewall issue, bloated AOL software, Port Magic)?
