Browser with user log on?

I have long been a fan of firefox but since google Chrome has been released i have switched to that. anyway, i am wondering if there is a way to have a log on system similar to windows for the browser. i am tired of my little brother getting on and messing everything up.

Re: Browser with user log on?

Where does the shortcut go to? Have you checked the path to make sure it's correct? What does the error message say?

Re: Browser with user log on?

the path that i am supposed to make it is this
Quote:
C:\Documents and Settings\User\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe –user-data-dir="..\User Data\Your_Name"
i have changed it to my path which is
Quote:
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe –user-data-dir="..\User Data\Bryant"
im not sure if i have to change anything else. Also there is no ".exe" file in that folder? the error message is
Quote:
The file C:\Documents cannot be found

Re: Browser with user log on?

Try putting quote marks at the start and end of the path. I think the problem is it can't find the exe because of the space between Documents and and (long folder name).

"C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe –user-data-dir="..\User Data\Bryant" "

Re: Browser with user log on?

OK, I've just had a go at following the instructions from my link, and managed to create a new Chrome profile and desktop shortcut. The only difficulty I had was remembering to change the username folder and profile folder names. See if this is any easier to follow......

1. Open Chrome and clear the browsing history under the spanner icon.

2. Open Windows Explorer and go to the Chrome folder - C:\Documents and Settings\ USERNAME\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\User Data

3. Make a copy of the Default folder in the User Data folder by right-button dragging it to an empty space and selecting Copy Here, then rename it. In this example, I've called it TestProfile.

4. To make this new profile the default for your brother, go to Start > Run > cmd and type
cd C:\Documents and Settings\ USERNAME\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\Application
(changing the folder names and USERNAME as appropriate for your setup)

The command prompt should now show the location of your Chrome folder. This is required for the exe to be found and run, the stage you got stuck at.

5. Type chrome.exe --user-data-dir="..\User Data\ TestProfile" -first-run
(changing TestProfile to the profile name of your choice)

6. A Chrome window will appear asking you to complete the process. Click the 'Start Google Chrome' button.

7. Right-click the desktop and select New Shortcut. Type the following into the Location box
C:\Documents and Settings\ USERNAME\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe --user-data-dir="..\User Data\ TestProfile
(changing the USERNAME and TestProfile as appropriate). This will be the shortcut your brother uses to open Chrome. You can use your original shortcut for yourself.

If the Command window is still open, type exit to close it.

Re: Browser with user log on?

There should be a space between chrome.exe and --user.

Re: Browser with user log on?

Check for extra or missing spaces. The example I give above shows a space before USERNAME and TestProfile. There should be no space there, it's just a problem with the way HTML codes are displayed in the thread when I use the Bold and Color tags.

If that doesn't fix it, I'm not sure what else to suggest. Hang on for some more replies fom Chrome users.
