multiple browser issue
Hey guys, I have a bit of an issue with my internet and was hoping to get some help.
Ok heres the situation: I cant access the internet using IE or Firefox. All i get is a cant find the address error. I know that im connected to my home network as I can download updates for programs, sign in to msn and my computer tells me I have an excellent connection. This first happened to me after I installed the new beta version for Firefox. Since then I have uninstalled it and deleted the install file. I am running Windows Vista. I have tried scanning my computer with various virus and antispyware programs, I have ran my computer in safe mode with networking, cleared my DNS cache, used a restore point, restoring internet explorer settings, used windows internet dianostics, I have also tried restoring winsock and ipv6 etc in comand prompt. Although when I ping websites through command prompt they fail. thanks in advance. |

Re: multiple browser issue
Hey your problem isn't a virus i've installed firefox 3b5 and it runs fine... i suggest you check your network settings, as it's a problem with IE and firefox and they don't share internet settings but they do share network settings.... you could check your proxy, but firefox normally says "firefox cannot find the proxy server" when its a proxy problem...
You need to thourougly check your network settings and ensure your network isn't local only, also what type of network do you have? do you have a router? if yes then try ping it (usually 192.168.1.1, but it all depends on the setup) Cheers, jamey |

Re: multiple browser issue
Okay so the problem is your network... Specifically the connection from the pc to your router. Have you got other computers on the network ? do they connect ok?
Another thing thats crossed my mind is your router's settings? Do you have a firewall enabled on the router? And does it filter mac addresses or limit IP addresses that can connect to it? Does vista's networking stuff say it's connected? and can you connect to alternate networks? Just trying to narrow down the problem, but if you can then check your router's settings because they could play a big part in it (i had problems setting up my router's firewall ages back and it frustrated me [A lot])... If theres a mod around and they could move this to the networking forums it may get 1nikki180 an answer... ![]() [Thread moved to Networking, thanks Jamey] Cheers, Jamey Last edited by koala : 05-16-2008 at 12:16 PM. |

Re: multiple browser issue
Please supply the following info, exact make and models of the equipment please.
What country are you located in. Name of your ISP (Internet Service Provider). What is the expected Upstream/Downstream speed for your ISP Connection? Make and exact model of the broadband modem. Make and exact model and hardware version of the router (if a separate unit). Model numbers can usually be obtained from the label on the device. Connection type, wired or wireless. If wireless, encryption used, (none, WEP, WPA, or WPA2) Make and model of your computer. Version and patch level of Windows on all affected machines, i.e. XP-Home (or XP-Pro), SP1-SP2, Vista, etc. The Internet Browser in use, IE, Firefox, Opera, etc. Please give an exact description of your problem symptoms, including the exact text of any error messages. If you're using a wireless connection, have you tried a direct connection with a cable to see if that changes the symptoms? If there are other computers on the same network, are they experiencing the same issue, or do they function normally? On any affected computer, I'd also like to see this: Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt: Type the following commands: PING 216.109.112.135 PING yahoo.com NBTSTAT -n IPCONFIG /ALL Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter. Paste the results in a message here. If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Re: multiple browser issue
Alrighty. to answer jamiemac2005's questions:
yes I have 2 other computers on the same network that are connected wirelessly. they are both just normal desktop pcs with windows xp. These connect fine. i dont think I have a firewall on my router.. but not sure how to check that. Not sure if it filters addresses or how to check that either. vista says that it is completly connected. I havnt tried connecting to other networks as they need netwrk keys to get in. to answer johnwill's questions: I am located in Australia. ISP is optusnet. download speed is 4.2 Mbps upload speed is 256Kbps. Modem is a Motorola SB4200 SURFboard cable modem. Router is a D-link Airplus G+ wireless router (Dl-624+) connection is wireless. I dont think encryption is used. my laptop is a hp pavillion entertainment dv9000. This laptop has vista on it. Both IE and firefox dont work on it. no other computers on my network are affected. basiclly my issue is that my laptop tells me that I am connected to my network, but I am unable to access the internet through firefox ot IE. I used to be able to do this. The only errors I get are through the browser, which gives the basic ie cannot find this page, you might have typed the address wrong etc. I have tried connecting it with cables, but it didnt work. also here are the results of the commands: Microsoft Windows [Version 6.0.6000] Copyright (c) 2006 Microsoft Corporation. Re: multiple browser issue
Well, you have full connectivity to the Internet, so I'd be looking at a firewall as the source of the issue. Disable ALL firewalls and see if that changes the behavior.
