EEK! Cannot logon to Email using Firefox

HI I recently just started having this problem. I am using Windows XP, Mozilla Firefox. A few days ago something happened where I keep getting a "Windows XP AntiVirus Protection" screen popping up asking me to scan the PC for viruses/malware and spyware. So I downloaded I think AVG and scanned everything and got rid of some unnecessary junk. From there everytime I try logging into Yahoo Mail, G-Mail, Hotmail, or even trying to log into Netflix, I get this CONSTANT messege:

Unable to connect

Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at login.yahoo.com.

* The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few
moments.

* If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network
connection.

* If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure
that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

Well, after talking with a buddy, I came to realize that the popup I kept getting was just a scam. So I removed AVG from my PC. I still cannot logon to anything that has to do with Email, or even Neflix. ( All other websites are ok to access ) Any Ideas on what I can do? I depend on my E-mail for work. Please help! I'm completely at a loss for words.

Another thing by the way is everytime I try to open Norton, it freezes up on me and I am unable to remove it in the Add/Remove programs menu in the Control panel, any connections?

If AVG found bad stuff, then your machine was infected with something. If Nortons wasn't having problems with AVG present, then your antivirus software hasn't been working properly for some time. There might still be something bad on there, so anything we suggest might not work ..and Norton's screwed up state could affect a lot of things.

I'd suggest it be looked at by a professional ..they can make sure the machine is clean, antivirus and antispyware software is active, and the firefox install is cleaned up. I'd want to make sure the machine+browser are clean before I'd start using them for work.

Re: Cannot logon to Email using Firefox

Hi, welcome to TSF

If you're having trouble with Norton and security popups, you might already be infected. AVG is one of the best freeware anti-virus scanners, so can safely be reinstalled if you don't already have one.

Please follow the instructions here (5 pages) and then post all the requested logs in a new thread here for the security analysts to look at. If you have any trouble running any of the scans, leave them and move onto the next.

The security forum is always busy, so please be patient and you will receive a reply as soon as possible. If you go to Thread Tools > Subscribe at the top of your new thread you will receive an email as soon as a reply is posted.
