Just cant open one site!

Hi,
have been trying to access the UK foreign office website www.fco.gov.uk when I put this into the address bar it takes me to Google where it gives the site as an option. When I select it from here (or any other search engine) it tells me it cannot connect either due to a fault in my connection or a fault at the site. I know the site is working because it is simultaneously acessed from a freinds computer. The same thing happens when I try and access from my laptop on my home network.

I have reset the browsers (firefox and ie 7) reset the router and tried switching off the windows firewall but without result. Not being overly tech minded cant think of anything else. any ideas or settings I should check?

Am away for a few days so if I don't reply staright away please don't think me rude or ungrateful.

Sometimes sites dont allow you in unless you are using internet explorer. yes, ive seen many american governments like that. Ive tried the site with firefox and it works fine.

What browser are you using??

Re: Just cant open one site!

Hi,

I have tried with ie 7 and firefox. It was even in my list of trusted sites. Thing is, it used to be fine.

Re: Just cant open one site!

Not as far as I know - only changes I am aware of are those made by windows update.

Good luck,

Re: Just cant open one site!

Good time of the day, Berty86!

How about checking the cookies? They might have been shut off. If they are, in some cases, one does not get the permission to access the site.

Can any security programs suddenly start blocking the attempt to visit this site. I get that sometimes when I turn on Tor- the IP hider program.

Try contacting their tech. support service (of the site) and ask them if they made any changes to the site. Maybe your computer is just not as "adaptable" as you would like it to be.

I know that my tips are unprofessional, but I really want to help.

Good luck,
Zquirrel.

Re: Just cant open one site!

Have checked the cookies and have no other security programs running. I will try and get hold of the FCO again but have found them to beelusive to say the least.

For the record, I appreciate any help as I find this modern day sourcery confusing when it doesn't do what I want it to. Am away for a few days - will report back

Many thanks

Can you copy and paste your hosts file here?

Can your browse to it from other browsers (Opera, lynx, Mozilla, et cetera)?
